AFTA Applauds Authorities in Landmark Human Trafficking Conviction

AFTA Commends Authorities Following Conviction in Human Trafficking Case.

The Association for Temping and Outsourcing Agencies (AFTA) strongly commends the actions taken by the Ombudsman, Identita, Jobsplus and the Police Force that led to the conviction of an inpidual found guilty of human trafficking by promising foreign nationals non-existent jobs.

AFTA would like to take this opportunity to comment that the inpidual involved was not licensed to carry out any outsourcing or temping activities and has no affiliation with AFTA or its members. A spokesperson from AFTA emphasised that “such practices are entirely inconsistent with AFTA’s mission and values. Our association is committed to fostering a transparent, ethical and professional environment in the outsourcing and temping sector, one that supports workers’ rights and contributes positively to Malta’s economy”.

This case also highlights the critical importance of regulatory oversight and the need to uphold the highest standards within the industry, and that penalties for such grave offences should be significantly strengthened to serve as an effective deterrent, helping to safeguard the reputation of the industry and protect vulnerable inpiduals from exploitation.

AFTA regrets that the actions of a few unlicensed inpiduals and operators that cast a shadow to this industry which plays a vital role in supporting the Maltese labour market. AFTA will continue to work closely with the relevant authorities and stakeholders to ensure that the industry remains safe, fair and reputable.
